Mission & History

Mission

The mission of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Alumni Association is to promote good fellowship among alumni; to strengthen the ties of loyalty and devotion of alumni to their alma mater; and to at all times further the interests of the institution.

Pothier Voorhies, pictured second from left on the bottom row, served as the first president of the Society of the Alumni, which is now the UL Alumni Association. He is seated with eight of his classmates in this 1903 graduation photgraph.

In support of this mission, the Alumni Council and the Alumni Staff work together to:

  • Promote and preserve the traditions of the University and the unique culture of our area
  • Promote UL Lafayette's status as a Doctoral II Research University and its commitment to undergraduate education with emphasis on the quality of teaching and sensitivity to diversity in the curriculum
  • Promote UL Lafayette's commitment to being both accessible and academically excellent

  • Encourage alumni and friends of the University to use their time, talents, financial and human resources for the betterment of UL and to influence others to do the same
  • Provide opportunities for alumni to interact with each other and the University through a variety of programs and services

"...the alumni of S.L.I.I. are doing well; they are at work, they are producing, their earning power is greatly enhanced because of their schooling, wherever they are, they are a force for progress in their communities, and they make a flattering showing for their school."

History

In 1903, the first graduating class of the Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute organized the Alumni Association. The Associations mission is "to promote good fellowship among its members, strengthen the ties of loyalty and devotion to their alma mater, and at all times to further the interests of the institution." This is the same mission that began the organization.

Ragin' Cajun alumni get together often via geographic clubs and special interest alumni chapters. UL alumni "pass a good time" at crawfish boils, receptions, dinners and gumbo cook-off from Denver to Atlanta, from Washington D.C. to the other LA, Los Angeles, and throughout Acadiana. The Association encourages alumni to network. Making contacts, doing business with one another, hiring UL Lafayette students and alumni and or assisting the university in its recruiting efforts, are just a few of the ways that the alumni network can be of benefit.

The Alumni Association also takes on special projects from time to time. The unique Walk of Honor is an example of such a project. The walk is a massive project to lay brick tiles along the Quadrangle archway; each tile engraved with the name of a graduate, arranged alphabetically by class year. The walk includes every graduate of the University and will expand with each graduating class.

Additionally, the Association maintains the Alumni Center (600 East St. Mary Blvd.) a wonderful place that helps capture the colorful traditions of the past and serves as the center for planning an exciting future. It is a wonderful place for all alumni to call "home".
